millers falls no. 5 type 6 (or 7) hand drill restoration

26.01.2023

i already had a millers falls no. 5 hand drill for a while, but then i found one on ebay that didn't state a number, only a patent date on the chuck "september 29th, 1896". after some research i came to the conclusion that it must be a millers falls no. 3 drill, so i bought it.

after cleaning it, it turned out to be no. 5😅 but why not, i love this drill and my old one is a type 9 and this one a type 6 or 7 (this i cannot quite make out), approximately 110 years old. so i took it apart, derusted where necessary and then painted the body with hammerite. although it says that it can be applied directly onto rust, i always strip down the tools to be on the safe side. if you paint over rust, it might destroy underneath the paint in the next years.

the wheel i painted with humbrol enamel paint 220 in racing red. both needed a couple of coatings of paint, but the result is outstanding. some of my instagram pals wrote "it looks factory fresh", "looks nicer than new" and "ready for another 110 years". let's see if it lasts that long. although i might not be able to live to see😅
